The Ronald McDonald Baking House is a residential shelter that helps keep families with sick children close to each other. They are partnered with the CHOC hospital. The Ronald McDonald Baking House helps provide the families with shelter and resources as their child is recuperating or undergoing treatment. It helps the families settle close to the hospital for a temporary amount of time. Assisteens help bake a variety of pastries such as cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. These delicious treats are then provided to the residents and children of the baking house. It is a hands-on event with many opportunities to care and give back to the community.
At the Brookdale Senior Living Community, Assisteens help the staff set up for their holiday celebrations, ranging from a St. Patrick's day party to Easter parties and many more. Many teenagers are clueless about the details of a Senior Living community. By volunteering here, the Assisteens have the opportunity of experiencing how the seniors live and how they are being taken care of. There are many frail patients and patients that are lively. The Seniors occasionally feel lonely and bored and sometimes, a simple party is all that it takes. It is a rewarding experience, to see how the simple action of setting up decorations can put a smile on someone's face and help them enjoy an event.
Connecting Hands OC is a nonprofit organization that collects clothing, books, shoes, and toys to help give them out to those who need them. The Assisteens of Anaheim helps this organization by providing volunteers that help sort out clothes and toys so they can be distributed. This is a great way to gain insight into the community. Connecting Hands OC helps families that are financially struggling. They know each and every family. Helping distribute toys and clothes was a meaningful opportunity. We were able to see how members of our community were struggling, and how we could help them and give back to our community.
Vineyard Church deals with the extremely prevalent hunger issue in Orange County. Vineyard Church collects packages of food and packs them into bags. It promotes working together as a team. The volunteers need to form a packaging line in order to be efficient and package as much food as necessary. Vineyard Church helps volunteers realize how many people are struggling to provide food to their families or remain hungry in the community around you. Vineyard Church is a great opportunity to give back to the community.
The food banks ensure that no individual in the community remains hungry. At the food banks, Assisteens help sort out various foods and package them so they can be shipped out to the community. Like Vineyard Church, the food banks helps volunteers realize how many people remain hungry due to the lack of food. It is a good opportunity to volunteer as your actions ensure that a family is provided with the sufficient amount of food so they do not live in hunger.
Project Linus is a non-profit organization that provides handcrafted blankets to children that are traumatized or ill in hospitals. Volunteers need to work as a team to help create blankets which will comfort the children during their difficult times. The blankets that the Assisteens make are donated to the CHOC hospital in Orange, CA. With the lead of Christopher Mancini, the Assisteens were able to participate in this activity and donate over 30 blankets.
The tutoring program is a fairly new program in which we provide free tutoring to low-income children in nearby school districts. Assisteens spend 20-40 minutes with students in grades K-6 and provide one-on-one tutoring in math and reading subjects. This beneficial program allows local students to get any help they need to excel in school.
