Exhibit 1

Education Motivation

Background: I was asked to create a digital display for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to reach for higher education. This display would be shown on TV screens in school hallways. The message needed to be brief and easy to read.

Design:

  • Contrast: The pink acts as a complementary color to the green, creating contrast to the image. The swirls of the Harrington font face contrasts with the straight lines of the Myriad Pro font face. To add to the contrast I lined the words in a darker pink so that the words would jump off of the green background. The Title words are lighter to grab attention.

  • Repetition: I repeated the font face in both the header and the subtitle. I also used repetition in the colors. The green color layered under the image was taken from the leaves. The pink of the letters was taken from the center of the flowers. The Outline of the letters in the title are the same colors as the words in the subtitle.

  • Alignment: To balance the flowers on the right side of the image, the text was aligned to the left.

  • Proximity: Both the header and the subtext are in two lines. There is a clear gap between them with the second line close to the first to create a clear visual grouping.

  • Color: The green color layered under the image was taken from the leaves. The pink of the letters was taken from the center of the flowers.

  • Type: Myriad Pro & Harrington

Revisions: I made multiple iterations of this project. At first I had an image of money being deposited into a piggy bank and the image of a graduate on a gradient background. On this poster was a saying about making your own dreams come true. After getting some feedback I changed the color scheme but it still didn't have the look I wanted. I ended up scrapping that idea and using this simple image with text. I think the simplicity of this poster works better.
