One of the values of theater is that it allows students to play adults and to deal with adult problems in a genuine way. Learning a role requires far more commitment and understanding than writing an essay. The preparation of a role can be beneficial to a student's development. Learning to take on different perspectives and portray them fosters empathy and understanding. The rehearsal or creation of mature material can in fact help the student mature. Thus there are strong reasons for doing material that is as mature as possible within the context of the educational setting.Â
Students must engage and create content knowing the priority is to maintain a professional, mature, and safe environment for everyone. The instructor will hold students accountable for maintaining these professional standards. Students who engage and create content in a way that does not take the educational setting into account will face consequences. These include losing credit for the assignment in question as well as administrative action.
