Cell phones and personal electronic devices (cameras, smart watches, etc.) may not be used during instructional (to include class and study hall time) without teacher permission. They may be used during non-instructional time such as passing time, break, and lunch. At all other times, devices must be turned off and put away following the schoolwide procedures. Any cell phone or electronic device that is either audible or visible during classroom time without teacher permission will be confiscated and penalties levied (see below). Students in any area outside of the classroom, during class meeting time, will also have the phone confiscated and penalties levied. In emergencies, students may use the telephone in the main office.
Tiered Responses to classroom policy violations:
1st offense: The teacher keeps the phone until the end of the block. iPass referral is done and consequence will be teacher detention. Teacher contacts parents and teacher detention assigned.
2nd offense: Teacher takes the phone and turns it into the office. Phone will remain in the office for the day. iPass referral is done and 1 hour office detention is assigned. Dean will contact parents. Phone can be picked up at the end of the day.
3rd offense: Teacher takes the phone and turns it into the office. Phone will remain in the office for the day. iPass referral is done and 2 hour office detention is assigned. Dean will contact parents. Phone must be turned into the office for the next school day. Phone can be picked up at the end of the day.
Additional offenses require a meeting between the Dean, parent (guardian) and the student to develop a plan.
Students must relinquish devices upon request by a faculty or staff member. Those who refuse, or refuse to identify themselves, will be considered insubordinate. Ashland High School accepts no responsibility for the loss and/or theft of electronic devices.
