Birmingham: A City in Need

In the late 1800s, Birmingham was turning into an industrial boomtown. The discovery of iron, coal and limestone created steel furnaces and job opportunities. However, living conditions became dreadful for many. Healthcare was scarce and unattainable for the poor. Birmingham was a city in desperate need of a hospital. St. Vincent’s hospital opened to the community on Dec. 20, 1898. In honor of our 125th Anniversary, our sites of care held celebrations throughout the day and collected hundred's of glove and sock donations for area nonprofits.

While many other hospitals during the 1960s lay claims to the crash cart invention, there is no other hospital whose history of the crash cart traces back to 1955 like St. Vincent’s.
