Sisters' Vigil

Sisters Benedicta Roach, Patricia Malloy, Antonia Hanrahan and Placida Scott comprised the original nursing staff of St. Vincent's.

To celebrate our 100th anniversary in 1998, a sculpture was designed to symbolize these four sisters who started St. Vincent's. Their imagery was conceived by Dr. Edwin Waldrop. Local sculptor Brad Morton created the Cor-ten and stainless steel, 12ft x 14ft x 24ft tall sculpture,  which was gifted by Dr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Cunningham.

The sculpture will keep vigil during the next 100 years, as Dr. Waldrop said, "a constant reminder that Birmingham is being watched over."
