Celebrating 125 years of service

St. Vincent’s hospital opened to the community on Dec. 20, 1898.  In honor of our 125th Anniversary, our sites of care held celebrations on that very day and collected hundred's of glove and sock donations for area nonprofits.

With the health system’s changes over the past 125 years, the one thing that has stayed the same - our mission.

“I think it’s no mistake that our mission starts with the word rooted. Rooted in the loving ministry of Jesus as healer, we commit ourselves to serving all persons with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable,” says Betsy Pautler, Chief Mission Integration Officer, Ascension St. Vincent’s.

Today’s anniversary celebration also recognizes our mission of caring for those who live in poverty and are vulnerable.

“Our glove and sock drive honors our commitment to being the hands and feet of Jesus.  These items will be donated to area nonprofits to help those in need stay warm this winter,” says Tim Puthoff, President of Ascension St. Vincent’s Birmingham, who led the celebration at the Birmingham campus.

Birmingham: A City in Need

In the late 1800s, Birmingham was turning into an industrial boomtown. The discovery of iron, coal and limestone created steel furnaces and job opportunities. However, living conditions became dreadful for many. Healthcare was scarce and unattainable for the poor. Birmingham was a city in desperate need of a hospital.
