We've been creating some magical works of art in the Art Room!
Students learn about ultraviolet light on the light spectrum, and how materials with phosphors will glow in this type of light. We use neon or fluorescent oil pastels, crayons, markers, and paint to create some amazing pieces that glow!
What is Glow Art?
You can create any type of art using neon materials and black lights. Sculpture, painting, drawing… as long as you have ultraviolet light and fluorescent materials, your art will glow!
What materials should I use?
Materials labeled “neon” or “fluorescent” usually will glow under black lights. Yellow, orange, pink and green glow the best. Blue and purple sometimes will not glow or are dull. Here are some materials I like to use:
· Highlighters
· Crayola neon oil pastels
· Crayola neon crayons
· Fluorescent tempera or acrylic paint
· Fluorescent paper or cardstick
· Neon pipecleaners
· Neon beads
· White Model Magic with highlighter or paint
How do I prepare my room?
Make sure to block out all natural light. Sometimes you may need to use dark paper to cover emergency lights or other light coming in. The darker the room, the better the UV light will make your materials glow!
There are so many possibilities when it comes to creating glow art with black lights. Using neon paper, paint, drawing and craft materials, the sky is the limit! Here are a few projects to get your ideas glowing.
