Pastor Johnson is conducting the service with all his family (wife, Sandra & Hartley) singing in the choir. Establish the three gossips in the congregation. Songs “Marching In” and “The Golden Gates”.

Sandra and her brother are sitting in the living room. She tells him that she was invited to sing for a reggae band that night and could he cover for her while she’s gone. Hartley protests, but agrees under pressure. Mrs. Johnson returns home from the hospital. Her children are very quiet when she comes in and she enquires about their welfare. She leaves to cook dinner and Pastor Johnson comes into the room and warns Hartley about playing football in his new shoes, with the backing of quotes from the Bible.
Outside later, Hartley notices two chaps in a car peddling drugs to some young people on a street corner.
Pastor Johnson is waiting up for Sandra. He wakes up from a doze as Sandra comes home. He confronts her about staying out late, and she admits that she’s singing in a reggae band. He slaps her, and as she starts crying, he tries to explain by singing a song about the hardships he and her mother had to go through, and why he is so strict. Calypso song – “Slipping & Sliding”.

The local Rastas are meeting for their Spiritual get-together. Song – “The Twelve Tribes of Israel”. They read from the Bible and praise Jah Jehovah. The brethren and sisters all join in.

Sandra watches from the back as members of the Twelve Tribes conclude their ceremony. They exchange friendly greetings as they leave. Sandra and Trevor are left alone in the hall. She sings “You’re the Man I Love” (declaring her love for the first time) and Trevor then sings his version of her song.

Eddie comes out from the cafe in his army uniform. As he sees Trevor he mocks a marching step and breaks into song “I’m a Soldier”. He is accompanied by six female dancers in Army Fatigues. After the song and dance, Trevor introduces Eddie to Sandra, ribs him about being in the Army. Sandra leaves them and they decide to go out on the town together that night.

Voices of two robbers about to break into a chemist shop. A clash of glass and they enter the shop, raid the shelves and are leaving, when Trevor and his brother. Eddie, enter upon the scene. The thieves run off, the two brothers decide to run in different directions. Eddie escapes, the police arrest Trevor for a robbery he hasn’t committed. Hartley, by chance has witnessed these events.
Three neighbourhood gossips spot Sandra walking in the distance. The three gossips are spreading news of Trevor’s arrest.
Hartley sees the two drug pushers on the street near the school gates. He puts two and two together and suspects them of the chemist shop break-in.
A small spiritual gathering is ending as Sandra arrives home. Father interrogates her and Hartley (“I want to get to the bottom of this”) and finds out the truth and gives Sandra an ultimatum. (“Choose between this gospel temple or the Rasta House”). Sandra sings, “I’m in Love with a Rastaman”. Mother is torn.
