Art museums preserve and exhibit art, as well as educate the public and community about art. While museums have gift shops, museums do not sell art to the common public. This is a place you would go to learn about and appreciate art, but not purchase art.
An art museum can be a vehicle for many of the roles that art plays in society, such as preserving and representing culture, challenging social norms, and articulating the search for that which is beautiful or thought provoking.

After exploring, contemplate: What are the barriers for people to experience art via an art museum?
Galleries exhibit and sell original art to the common public. Galleries often specialize in styles of art, specific media or art intended for a targeted market of patrons. Galleries host receptions to encourage and engage the art community, as well as to promote the sale of art they exhibit.
Exhibitions can be anywhere. Exhibitions can be in galleries, museums, but can also be in a coffee shop, an open field, a bookstore. An exhibition is a display of art. The purpose of an art exhibition is unique to each exhibition, driven by artists' ideas, the context of the space, and the organizer or curator of the exhibition. Exhibitions may feature work that is for sale, or not; by one artist or many; in a single media or several.
An art cooperative (or co-op) is a group of artists working together. This often happens in a shared space. This space may be open or partially open to the public. The artists may organize shared resources, studio spaces, hosted trainings, shared exhibitions or gallery spaces.

A place designated and intended for art making. Studios house tools, materials and supplies, half completed works, inspiring items artists have gathered, reference images and works that are ready for purchase or exhibition. Some artists work in large studios, room sized or even multiple rooms. Other artists have a small desk in the corner of a room that is designated as their "studio."
An organization that promotes the arts by organizing. Arts councils are not specific to visual arts, but serve all arts (such as film, theater, music, etc.) by organizing events, exhibitions, fundraising, hosting grants, hosting educational experiences, facilitating communication, and advocating on behalf of artists in their community.
Organized by a city or other venue, many artists come, set up as "vendors" with temporary exhibitions of their work and sell directly to the public. Musicians, food, contests and other entertainment are often part of the festival; community oriented. Festivals are typically free and open to the public. Artists pay for a space to set up and sell their work.
