This was a collaboration between Corrine Mina, music therapist, and Keynessa Nazaire, drama therapist. Corrine was exploring ways to amplify Black voices using music as a support, not the main vehicle. They recorded this back in June of 2020, but it is still as relevant as ever.
"Lost in a sea of hashtags
My mother did not name me
For my legacy to be death
Stripped of my right to life by those sworn to protect it
Stripped of my right of breath by those who just couldn't stand it
Couldn't stand that my skin soaks up the sun out of thirst due to its inability to breathe
Couldn't stand that we dare take a stand cause when we kneel we're not begging
No. We're not begging for change, we demand it
Demand a change in the system that keeps its knees pressed up against our throats with the intent to silence
Demand a change in the system that already has its finger on the trigger ready to shoot at the slightest inconvenience
For the lives lost at the hands that neither serve nor protect, we demand justice
To bring air to the souls that are drowning
To bring peace to those who are still fighting
For we were not named for our legacy to be death
But forever engraved our legacy shall be"
