mua mua

1.)

my mother’s body is a river,

she says the rain

season in

vietnam brings

a fresh body of water, says

mua mua (rain rain)

2.)

on our best mornings,

i would watch

her get up early to make

banh xeo,

always

half a teaspoon of

sugar and salt

coconut milk

and water

somehow

the house always got quieter

my father wasn’t as

angry, banh xeo is

divinity

3.)

my mother used to take us

rain dancing

it’s tuesday again

my mother says

back in vietnam when it

rained

there would

be magic and dance

4.)

i give my

grief a name

magic is to name

something, give rain,

and we will dance

when

the rain

season starts
