LESSON 1 & 2:

MAKING THE ARMATURE

Lesson 1 - Making the armature of the sculpture with newspapers, recycled materials and masking tape. 

Present desired project outcome: 1 A4 size sculpture (individual work)

1. Design the flower / bird / butterfly. Plan the parts. Sketch ideas. 

2. Make and shape the armature with newspapers. 

3. Tape sparingly to form the shape. Try not to tape over tape (use as little tape as possible). 

4. Label your armatures with a black marker or pen. Leave in school locker. DO NOT BRING HOME. 

LESSON 3 & 4:

PAPER MACHE 

1. Show Britto video. 

2. Complete the armature/s. 

3. Tear newspaper strips and put in bag so it doesn't fly off. 

4. Paper mache the armatures. 

Steps to Papier-mâché (pap-yay mash-ay) 

1. Tear the newspaper into small strips. Estimate the amount you need and tear the strips first before getting your fingers sticky with glue. 

2. Prepare the glue mix (1 cup water + 1 cup white glue). Stir the glue and water gently with your fingers. 

3. Dip the paper strips one at a time in the glue mix and stick on your sculpture armature. Remove excess glue with your fingers. 

4. Check that the sculpture front and side surface is covered fully. 

LESSON 5 & 6:

FINISH PAPER MACHE & LEARN TO MAKE PAPER PULP

1. Complete the paper mache process. 

2. Make paper pulp. 

3. Apply pulp to make 3-D elements on FRONT of large sculpture only.

how to make Paper pulp

1. Mix one part glue to 4 parts water to create a glue mixture. 

2. Tear and add bathroom roll paper to the glue mix and massage it till it is quite smooth and becomes the consistency similar to soft clay. 

3. The paper pulp should not be too dry or too wet. It will be sticky due to the glue mixture. 

4. Get rid of any lumps or large pieces. Press and and knead it in. 

5. Form a shape with the pulp. If it holds the form you made, it's ready! 

MAKING AND APPLYING PULP

Apply paper pulp on the front display side. Add relief details.

1. Unroll toilet paper roll into the glue mix and massage paper into pulp form. 

2. Check if pulp is too watery or too dry. Form a ball in your hand. See if it stays in form. 

3. Apply thin layer of pulp to base of sculpture.
