Intro to Digital Media (IDM) is a computer-based studio course that concentrates on the basics of digital media, including imagery, sound, video, animation, and the web. Students engage projects in the technical, conceptual, and aesthetic aspects of digital media. They employ a diverse range of techniques and software, as they become familiar with key moments in media history, contemporary artistic processes involving the use of the computer, and other technologies. The class will consist of hands-on experimentation and production supplemented by lectures, class discussions, demos, visiting artist talks, readings/podcasts, field trips, critiques, and academic research. As part of the suite of courses at Arizona State University, it is organized around a series of themes and embedded in a philosophy of inquiry-based learning to facilitate critical thinking, conceptual depth, and broad-based historical and cultural awareness.
