Last update: Fall 2020
Hello Studio Faculty,
I wanted to follow up with a few critically important updates for you concerning Honors Contracts, Thesis Defenses, and changing rules within Barrett.
Since its inception Barrett, the Honors College, mandated that all Honors Contracts be held with full time faculty, either visiting or tenure track. Recently they have updated their mandate to include Faculty Associates. From Barrett:
Updated policy on Faculty Associates and Honors Enrichment Contracts: We have been receiving questions about whether or not FA’s may take on an Honors Enrichment Contract, and have updated our policy with the following statement:
Faculty Associates should never be required to offer enrichment contracts, but may if they are amenable, under the following conditions:
The faculty associate is not teaching the class for the first time.
There are no objections from the head of the unit and/or the FHA(s) serving in the unit.
If there are no objections among studio faculty I will go ahead and make the change in our FHA guidelines.
Art History has already voted to include Faculty Associates.
Regarding Honors Thesis Committees, currently it is required that full time faculty be the Chair, and the second and third readers can be of various other academic ranks. The updates from Barrett do not change this requirement, only requirements for Honors Contracts.
Regarding Thesis Defenses this academic year, from Barrett: A reminder from the Barrett Advising Office: Many thanks for your flexibility and support in helping Barrett students through the thesis process. We have been receiving questions about the defense and submission process and wanted to share updates. We are operating with a similar model as last semester. Please share with your unit.
Thesis Defenses: We recommend Zoom defenses, as it would allow others to observe. Once the defense date is set, students should submit the details (including Zoom link) to Barrett: https://barretthonors.asu.edu/academics/thesis-and-creative-project/defense/defense-reporting-form
Final Thesis Submission:
STEP 1: Thesis Director Approval- Thesis directors must give approval to Barrett Advising by emailing approval to BarrettAdvising@asu.edu.
STEP 2: Digital Submission- Students must upload the final project: https://mediated.lib.asu.edu/bhcsubmit .
For additional questions, please contact us at BarrettAdvising@asu.edu
If you have any concerns regarding the recent changes in Barrett’s policies regarding Honors Contract and Honor Thesis Committee’s please reach out to me directly.
Thanks, hope everyone is staying safe and well.
