Shortcuts in Adobe Photoshop
Memorizing shortcuts will speed up your workflow and make using the software feel more free-flowing.
In my experience, the less that you are menu diving, the more you are able to concentrate on making art. One of the great strengths of Procreate is they built a clean interface that relies heavily on gestures and simple menus. Although Photoshop is a more elaborate piece of software, learning shortcuts will allow you to work in a similar way that is more fun and instinctive.
Below is a list of Shortcuts that I find to be the most useful.
Photoshop Shortcuts
Basic Tool Shortcuts:
B = Brush Tool.
E = Eraser Tool
i = Eyedropper Tool. Click the eyedropper over a color to select that color
C = Crop Tool
L = Lasso tool. Quickly select areas of your image with this tool.
Command + D = Deselect. Once you're finished with a Lasso selection, you will want to deselect it. There will also be a small drop down menu "deselect" by your cursor
V = Move Tool. Move a layer or selection.
Command + T= Free Transform. This allows you to move, scale, or rotate the selected layer or region. I personally use this shortcut heavily.
Navigation Shortcuts:
Z = Zoom In. Drag Right to zoom in. Drag Left to zoom out.
H = Hand Tool. Pan around the document once zoomed in.
Command + 0 = Fit the Document to Fit Screen This is a helpful shortcut if you are zoomed in and want to quickly return to viewing the entire image.
R= Rotate the document on screen. This will allow you to rotate the canvas on your screen, much the way you'd rotate your drawing paper. Hold SHIFT + R if you want to snap the rotation by 15 degree increments.
Shortcuts while using Brush or Eraser Tool:
[ & ] = Press the square bracket keys while using the brush or eraser tool to increase/decrease brush size.
Right Click on Canvas = Get Brush pop-up menu. This will allow you to select new brushes and adjust brush parameters.
Press Number Keys 1- 0 = Change the Brush Opacity from 10% -100%
SHIFT + Number Keys 1- 0 = Change the Brush Flow from 10% -100%
Hold OPTION (or Alt) + Press Number Keys 1- 0 = Change the brush stroke's Smoothness from 10% -100%. This is like Procreate's Drawing Stabilization.
In Order to Draw Straight Lines & Perspective
SHIFT + Draw with the Brush Tool = Create a straight horizontal or vertical line
In order to Create Straight lines at different angles: With the brush tool, click on the point where you'd like to begin your line. Next, Hold Shift, and click on the point where you'd like to end the line. This will create a straight line at any angle, much like using a ruler on a piece of paper. Make sure that you are using a brush like the standard hard brush, some brushes don't work well with this trick.
Layer Shortcuts
Right Click on Layer = Right clicking on a Layer opens a pop-up window that allows you to: duplicate a layer, move a layer into another document, add a Clipping Mask, access advanced blending options, group layers, and much more.
Command + J = Duplicate the layer that is currently selected
Shift + Command + N = Create a new, empty layer. You can also simply click the plus icon at the bottom right of the Layer Panel.
Command + G = Group multiple layers. First, be sure to hold shift and select the multiple layers that you would like to select.
Document Shortcuts
Shift + Command + S = Save As
Command + S = Save
Command + Z = Undo (This command can also be done by going to the Top Bar > Edit > Undo)
Shift + Command + Z = Redo
Command + N = Create a New Document
