Our "My Journey" presentations directly support the standard of establishing a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment, particularly Element B, by fostering a sense of community and mutual respect within our classroom. Each presentation allowed us to share our unique stories—where we’re from, who we are, our interests, and our experiences working with children. This process created an opportunity for us to learn about each other’s backgrounds, identities, and perspectives, highlighting the diversity within our group.
By actively listening to one another’s journeys, we built a deeper understanding and appreciation for the different paths that have brought us to this shared space. It helped establish a sense of connection and inclusivity, where everyone’s voice and experiences were valued. This shared activity not only encouraged respect for multiple aspects of diversity but also worked toward the common goal of creating a collaborative and supportive community of learners. It modeled the kind of environment we want to create for our future students—one where everyone feels seen, heard, and respected.
Interviewing my two 6th-grade students supports my understanding and demonstration of Standard 2, Element C by helping me better understand how to engage students as individuals with diverse needs and interests. Through the interviews, I gained insight into their unique experiences—what they find challenging, like balancing homework with extracurriculars, and what they value, such as having more time to dive deeper into topics or incorporating creativity into their learning. These conversations allowed me to see the importance of adapting my teaching to meet their needs while respecting their individuality.
By listening to their perspectives, I developed a deeper appreciation for the challenges and preferences that shape their experiences as learners. Their feedback about the need for choice, creativity, and feeling safe in the classroom reinforced the importance of building an inclusive environment where all students feel supported. This assignment helped me connect with the students on a personal level and reflect on how I can create a classroom culture that values each learner’s voice and experience. It modeled the kind of responsive teaching that ensures all students feel seen, heard, and empowered to succeed.
