Service Learning Experience | ART 325 (Concepts in Art Education) – Fall 2024

In Fall 2024, I participated in a five-week Service Learning collaboration with Artistic Abilities, a Fort Collins–based nonprofit committed to inclusive creative expression for individuals with and without disabilities. This experience was part of Colorado State University's ART 325: Concepts in Art Education.

Working with adult students with cognitive disabilities, I partnered with two classmates to co-teach inclusive art lessons designed to foster accessibility, engagement, and creative confidence. Two of the five sessions were co-taught, while each of us individually led one session, providing peer support throughout the program. All lessons emphasized adaptable instruction and the belief that every student, regardless of ability, can meaningfully participate in the art making process.

This experience deepened my understanding of inclusive pedagogy and differentiated curriculum planning, while also allowing me to connect with and learn from members of the broader Fort Collins community through shared creative experiences and an appreciation for art. 

Our work culminated in a public art exhibition celebrating the students’ artwork, which further highlighted the value of inclusion, collaboration, and creative expression.
