"The flower-cutting industry is not an everyday conversation starter but is one of our most underrated economic drivers. We don’t realize how much we rely on these pretty coloured petals on emerald stems.
Nor do we realize how unethical it is.
Floriculture heavily relies on people and its usage for various celebrations and rites of passage, from weddings to funerals and cultural gatherings. In Canada alone, Flowers Canada Growers report that “in 2019, the industry generated $1.566 billion in national farm gate sales, and of that, over $500 million worth of flowers were exported. Nationwide, greenhouse floriculture is the 6th largest crop and the 10th largest agricultural product...”

"In the spirit of Women’s History Month, March 2024, we celebrate and honour the achievements and livelihoods of women worldwide.
But often, the notion of celebrating and recognizing women is viewed as hateful rhetoric.
South Korea is one of the world’s most systematically patriarchal societies in the developed world. And with their conservative president Yoon Suk Yeol’s re-election in 2022, the notion of celebrating women’s livelihood is as taboo as ever, especially with the recent blatant disregard for proposals to strengthen the nation’s current rape law..."

"Winter 2024 reading week for Mount Royal University (MRU) students has concluded— a period where students can supposedly catch their breath. And some things change every year, but many others do not— one of them includes TikTok’s recently popularized trend: “bed rotting.”
As the name suggests, “bed rotting” has been used to describe a form of relaxation deemed as unproductive and typically paired with mindless passive entertainment like “doom scrolling”– all in bed..."

"Not to be the party poopers, but… Saltburn (2023) could be better. Sure, it’s cinematographically pleasing, and so is Jacob Elordi. But it’s not the new American Psycho (2000) that some folks claim it is. And we’ll tell you why.
Written and directed by Emerald Fennell, the movie was released on November 22 and premiered at the 50th Telluride Film Festival. Slowly, Saltburn trickled its way into theatres towards the end of 2023. According to Vulture, while Fennell is in the early phases of her career, “It feels fair to say that her more irritating habit as a writer is a fondness for button-pushing last acts that undermine all the character building that’s come before.” And we agree..."

"From where the Bow and Elbow Rivers meet, there is water flowing to every home and business, sustaining any Calgarian who cranks open the faucet. But for decades now, Calgarians have thought twice before filling up their glasses as they stop to consider the implications of their water in the long run. The debate for fluoride in our water supply is an example of this conundrum.
Fluoride is already a natural mineral in our water supply—we consume it everyday. In fact, Calgary had introduced 0.7 mg/l (the suggested concentration) of fluoride in our water since 1998, but was discontinued in 2011 by the Calgary Council over their fear of overarching costs. In the 2021 General Election, 64 per cent of Calgarians voted “yes” to reintroduce fluoridation..."

"It’s not always easy being the student others can turn towards, to confide in, to rely on, all while keeping up with school assignments and exams. It’s not easy being a student leader, but, then again, no one ever said it was.
When I’m not punching out articles with The Reflector, I serve as the President of the Student Society of Science and Technology (SSST), a non-profit club at Mount Royal University (MRU). Although I consider myself a student leader, I will be transparent and admit I’m not sure I can call myself a good one— because I’m not always sure what a good student leader looks like..."

"It would be at this time every year when I give up on my New Year’s resolutions. But 2023 is finally the year I can say that’s not the case (at least to an extent). But I’m not writing this to flaunt my progress; I have to credit the people who are making it happen. During the wake of my annual resolution motivation regression, I stumbled upon a Mount Royal University (MRU) student-led “support group” called Project U."
