Dear Arrowhead Beach Community Members,
We are actively addressing this situation and have contracted with an engineer to determine the best long term solution for maintaining the disinfectant byproducts (DBP) of TTHM to be below the 0.080 mg/L threshold. In the meantime, until such modifications to the system can be implemented, we will be flushing the system, which is a short term method for lowering the DPM levels. We will be continuing to test periodically. At present, the TTHM level is slightly over the 0.080 mg/L threshold. We are in direct communication with the WA DOH engineer for Island county. The WA DOH has not indicated to Arrowhead Beach Coop that it is necessary to use bottled water.
Here is some further information from the WA DOH website: Disinfection Byproducts—Chlorination of Drinking Water | Washington State Department of Health . Here is an excerpt from that website to address your concern:
"According to EPA, some people who drink water containing TTHM or HAA5 in excess of the established MCLs over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidneys, or central nervous system and may have an increased risk of getting cancer. At present, however, there is no conclusive evidence linking DBPs in water with cancer or other health effects."
We test the water system periodically for many different contaminants, bacteria and byproducts and supply those reports to the WA DOH. We also post the report to our website (www.arrowheadbeachcoop.org). Our water system has consistently exceeded the quality standards established by the WA DOH, except for this one DBP as noted.
We will be sending out future notifications as to the status of the situation.
Regards,
Mark Kraus
