I organized and presented a tutorial on tournament design at WINE 2025. It covered all the literature on the topic at the time.
The tutorial was broken down in two halves. In the first half, I motivated the problem with examples from high-stakes sports competitions. I outlined three basic desiderata and developed mathematical language to qualify these desiderata. Then, I presented some basic impossibility results. This motivated the introduction of a relaxation that has proved quite fruitful. I presented all known results in the basic model, sketching some proofs.
In the second half, I presented three "variations" on the basic model: the inclusion of a prize vector, the inclusion of a distribution model and a framework to analyze recursive rules and the modification of the model to interpolate between fully transferable and fully intransferable utilities. I concluded with some more fun examples and discussed some ideas for future work.
Here are my slides for the tutorial.
