SYMPTOMS . 1-5 Taken from www.abusefreedom.com (abuse-in-relationships/types-of-relationship-abuse/digital-abuse-in-modern-relationships/)
Digital abuse can have severe emotional, psychological, social, physical, legal, and financial consequences. It is important to be aware of these impacts to better address and support individuals who have experienced digital abuse.
The emotional and psychological effects of digital abuse can be long-lasting and debilitating. Victims may experience anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, feelings of shame, guilt, or worthlessness. They may also develop symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and struggle with trust issues and forming healthy relationships in the future.
In some cases, digital abuse can escalate to physical harm or violence. The emotional distress caused by digital abuse can also manifest in physical symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches, insomnia, or weight changes. It is essential to take these physical consequences seriously and seek help if you are experiencing them.
Gaslighting is a psychological manipulation tactic commonly used in digital abuse. It involves the abuser making the victim question their own reality, memory, or sanity. They may deny or minimize their abusive behavior, blame the victim, or distort the truth. Gaslighting can be extremely damaging and can further deepen the victim’s sense of confusion and self-doubt.
Digital abuse often leads to social isolation as the abuser may try to control and limit the victim’s interactions with friends and family. By isolating the victim, the abuser maintains power and control over their life, making it even more difficult for the victim to seek help or support.
