Leader: The Leviathan
Population: unknown
Governmental Structure: former magocracy, now Anarchism
“There are some things best left forgotten and unseen.”
Lophii was once a beautiful jungle kingdom. Known to be lush and verdant, it was home to wide- ranging merchants, and a source of supposedly ancient mysteries. Powerful sorcerers made up of Fae, Humans, and Demonkin were said to have made an alliance and created one of the most powerful Magocracies in Archaean history.
While a powerful cabal of mages could hold off almost any threat, it was no match for the face of Archaea itself changing. Over centuries as the smokes of the Kagepolis megacity spread, the waters slowly rose and consumed the lands. The people of Lophii rejected the ideas of leaving their homes and land, and chose instead to continue inhabiting the drowning cities and towns. In short order they changed, whether through some ancient magic long lost or by the changing world itself as they began to grow webbing between their fingers and toes, gills at the neck, and even more spectacular traits.
Now, Lophii is a place of unique challenges and opportunities. A floating kingdom of barges, ships and detritus have been lashed together to create a knotwork of a city that would rival the complexity of any metropolis placed on land. Within the gangways and net walks, any need that you have, item you seek, or desire you want fulfilled can likely be met for a price.
Tales tell that the merfolk have always heard a call from deep beneath. One which draws them to go ever deeper, and seek out those hidden things that may be forgotten. Whether true or not, there is no mistaking that the people of Lophii come across some of the most interesting things.
Regional Professions
Netcasters
Trait: Mutable Form
Netcasters are said to hear the voice of The Leviathan itself, and are driven to carry out its will. Whether that is true or not, you would have to find a Netcaster to ask - and that is an unlikely feat. One day they may wear the face of a seafaring merchant, and the next they resemble a local guard and are slipping poison into a junta leader's drink. They slide through society, fulfilling whatever voice or self-interest drives them, and tend to slip away unnoticed before being perceived as a threat.
Role:: assassin, spy, diplomat
Flotsamer
Trait: Collector
For the Flotsamer, nothing goes to waste. Typically, they anchor their floating markets to the buildings just beneath the waves in Lophii. They scavenge goods from the uninhabited places below, and from the flotsam that invariably makes its way along the sea currents to the Sunken Kingdom. They are the most visible, and the most interacted with portion of merfolk society. Happy to trade goods with any sailer, or landlubber - so long as the price is right.
Role:: merchant, scavenger, inventor
