Kagepolis, the City of Ash. It is said that the mountain had not yet burst when the first village was built along its side. The ground there grew crops best of all, and the people were happy. In time they began to find diamonds flowing freely in the stream beds, and they took these to trade with the people of Lophii before it sank. Even the jotun would make their yearly passage as far as the lands where Kagepolis now reside - and things were said to be simple but fair for all.

When the great mountain erupted 5,000 years ago, no one was prepared. There had not been tremors before, or great plumes of smoke in the sky, all at once the world shook and burst upwards from beneath the feet of the people there. The sky was irrevocably darkened.

After the calamity in those first years, people began to find larger diamonds that had been uprooted, and then the veins of coal were found and the great excavations began. Shortly after the first great mining machines were built, the people of Kagepolis began to thrive on the earnings from the crystal trade. It was agreed that all of the bounty, and all of the work would forever be shared. As the fields were choked by the dark sky, food was brought in from afar. As the waters began to ran brackish, barrels of fresh were brought into the harbor daily. Still the people worked and dug up the stone.

The City now stretches in a continuous sprawl covering hundreds of miles. The people within are covered in soot and ash from their furnaces, and it is only the long tubes held aloft by the Aeronauts that keep fresh air pumping down to them.

Regional Professions

Sweeper or Furnace Unionist
Trait: I Know A Guy

During your shift you are a hard-working contributor to Kagepolis. You collect a fair wage, you eat standard supplied rations, drink standard drink, and consume the appropriate amount of naut-Air. But that could be said of any who live within Kagepolis, what sets you apart is your sense of duty and responsibility to the workers. You are a volunteer, a steward of ideals, to better and benefit your fellows at either the Furnace or Sweeper. For this - you have done countless deeds many of which were sanctioned assembly but likely also included espionage, burglary and even assassination against the rival Union.

Role:: shop stewards, spy, burglar

Aeronaut
Trait: Handyman

The City of Ash would be impossible to live in if not for the work of the Aeronauts. They pilot and crew balloon-craft high into the air, and suspend a network of carefully attended pipes and bellows which filter and drag clean air downward to the mines. Contrary to belief, the Aeronauts do not in fact breath the best air of Kagepolis, as often they are tending to broken lines, clogged filters, and worse. Their lives are typically short, dangerous and alone. They say an old Aeronaut is as rare to find as a peach grove in the City of Ash.

Role:: pilots, organizers, scrubber
