Our site is located on the highly traveled intersection of Madison and East 28th street. It gives us the opportunity to peel this facade out of its monotonous surroundings, and bring as much life to it as there is surrounding it.
This region of Manhattan is primarily comprised of buildings built between 1875 to the 1920s. That means these buildings are on average over 100 years old.
Buildings in this time were primarily made of stone and brick, creating a very monotone and faded streetscape. With New York being such a vibrant city we decided to analyze what colors would contrast these as a means of bringing life and revitalization to the area.
Existing: columns space 24' within a uniform grid system
Turn: line extended 14' from edge of single column (sized not to exceed typical modular sizing for portability)
Expand: added 4' creates trapezoid offering greater surface area
Extrude: module unit is formed
Shade: fins added for interior shading around the south and west facades
Curve: creates a softer, more organic feel to the rectilinear streetscape
Colored fins bring the facade to life. Greens, blues, and gold were strategically chosen to contrast what exists as well as to reflect nature and the feeling of relaxation.
Each module creates a connection between the office environment and the outdoors. Each module comes equip with a green roof, giving a view of a planted green space to the modules above it.
The colored facade brings vibrancy to an otherwise dull streetscape.
Gold fins are equipped with LED lights to help the building stay as alive at night as it does during the day.
New York City is inherently directional because of its use of one way streets. The modules embrace that by creating a different perspective as you travel around the building. Walking down the street you will witness the building transform from being largely transparent to being overwhelmingly opaque and colorful.
The perimeter of the building is brought to life through the modules. The undulating facade breaks up and extends the space to allow for better programmatic uses.
Double height areas are focused on comfort. Small collaboration spaces adjacent to light and green space promote creativity. Window seating zones serve to provide a space to get away from your desk and take in light. Patios allow office workers to get a breath of fresh air to help maintain focus.
Access to the outdoors gives workers a space to break away from the office and refocus.
Relaxation zones help workers feel comfortable, and almost at home in the office environment.
Each prefabricated module is made to stack on top of one another. Once the facade is fully assembled, the fins are attached in a typical manner.
Modules fabricated offsite are able to be joined to the structure of the existing building by way of welded connections at the outtermost columns.
