In these times of accelerated change that we are experiencing, as professionals in the field of architecture, our challenge lays on the ability to adapt and ascend the built environment and the quality of life. Our focus for this project is on alternate behaviors of structure and efficiency, modes of generation of vertical and horizontal growth, and methods of sustainability of skin performance and urban impact. With guidance from visiting instructors, structural engineer and a designer from SOM, in New York City, we have developed a prototypical system to 63 Madison avenue in NYC that takes into consideration the changing culture of an office building in a ever-changing contemporary American City .
Through this project we are trying to change the generic office culture by introducing a public realm within the walls of an office space
Concept 1 Concept 2 Concept 3
This building section helps us understand the progression of the public realm through the building.
A series of stairs allow for clear access and circulation from one space to the other.
As you enter the building the space opens up to a large lobby with a reception desk and the ability to ascend through the stairs or walk into your private office space. This area features an open staircase that can act as an Indoor Amphitheater.
The new entrance of the building creates a sense of place in which people can gather and connect with others. By adding the steps steps leading to the lobby space, one can understand the progression continues on the inside
You are also able to get a sense of direction and journey as you approach the building from either side. The openness and spaciousness of the facade draws the public entrance
After the Ground floor plan we decided to draw focus on the 6th Floor plan in which we proposed a large open space with a void where office people and the public can collaborate, new open glass working space and a market space
Similarly to the 6th floor plan, new program is added to the 12th floor. The public can access this space in one of two ways; through stairs on the facade leading up to this floor, or through a service elevator leading to a small lobby, which breaks into office space and exterior public open space. This floor features a cafe with outdoor seating and a viewing glass platform.
People coming out of the office to meet a friend for lunch or collaborate with another worker from a different company and meet in these spaces
This image shows the structural addition that was made to hold the Bridges and Walkways Connecting the public space to the Office Space
The cutout of the lab repeats throughout the building in an ascending matter. This building section looking West, shows the opening on the left descending and the opening on the right ascending conceptually. The partial wall section labeled P-1 shows the relationship of the two facade treatments. The curtain all system depicts open collaborative spaces, while the green facade depicts private office space.
To achieve a green facade system in the context of New York City, we developed secondary skin to act as a greenhouse for the plants to grow all year round. The new slab holds a planter with a frame for climbing plants.
Our facade is a Double Skin facade having a planter with a frame for the plants to grow this acts as a thermal shade for the office spaces
Diva Lighting Analysis- A lighting analysis was conducted using an office bay on the West facing facade. The left image shows the current condition. The right image shows the analysis using the new double skin green facade. With the addition, office spaces now fall within the recommended illuminance level in a typical office space.
In an attempt to improve the interior environment of a typical office space in our building. We conducted a lighting analysis that resulted in better daylighting conditions of the space. The image on the right shows the analysis uses a typical office space on the East facing facade. By adding the new double skin green facade system, we were able keep the space within the recommended illuminance level in a typical office.
We hope that in these times of uncertainty and change, our project can serve as an example of the possibilities and opportunities we have to change and create a better built environment. Not only to improve our everyday working experience but also our well-being and our future.
