El pez remo libre: cuentos de Cerro Azul (The Free Oarfish: Tales from Cerro Azul) is our first collection of stories created by children who took part in the Cerro Azul Storytelling Workshop held in August and September 2024.
Over two months, together with a group of children ages 7 to 12, we explored, played, did free writing exercises, and visited several places in Cerro Azul. We went to the Municipal Museum, the market, and the artisanal fishing pier. We also visited the Cerro de Oro archaeological site in San Luis de Cañete. Along the way, we talked with archaeologists, landladies, fishermen, and neighbors from the community to gather inspiration for our stories.
The result is a handmade cardboard book, with each copy featuring a unique cover and special details. The book’s title comes from one of the stories inspired by the testimony of local fishermen who encountered this mythical fish.
You can get a copy by writing to our email or calling our contact number. 😉
To celebrate our first book, we were joined by our artist friends: the dancers from Nunash School, PapAlvaRock with live rock music, La Mamba urban music creation, and Carlos Torres, oral storyteller. This celebration took place at the Development and Training Center of the NGO Alma Cápac, who kindly lent us their space. Admission was free, and it was a community-led event.
Thank you to everyone who made this celebration possible!
