Building an aquaponics system means integrating aquaculture with hydroponics-you are basically setting up and joining these two farming methods together. Although this can sound like a feat, it is actually fairly easy to set up an effective aquaponics system if you have clear instructions and an understanding of the fundamentals of such a system.

To keep life easy, before starting the construction of this device, you should first do some preparation. Place, method of aeration, selecting the fish, selecting the plants, and pot placement are the most important things you need to remember.

This would obviously rely on the room you have available with regard to position-whether it 's in the home, in the garage or in the yard. You can basically set up an aquaponics system anywhere, but then you will have to change it accordingly. You will mainly need to make sure that the temperature of the location is acceptable (You would need to worry about insulation if you bring it outdoors and live in a cold area) and ensuring there is adequate light (if it is inside, you will need to have big windows or artificial lighting set up). In addition, if you place the device outdoors, make sure that you do not get toxic substances into the water-you will need to properly cover and protect them.

Your fish will need oxygen to live and survive, and you will usually need a kind of pumping system, but without any pumps or equipment, there are ways to achieve good aeration. This will depend on the species of fish you are going to develop, though. That takes us to the next point to consider: which fish species to select. Different fish will have different requirements (some are easier to develop than others); there are also rules on which you can keep fish, so make sure that you review the laws of the state in which you live. In aquaponic systems, some common fish include carp, trout, catfish, tilapia, and Murray cod.

It is usually easier to choose what plants to grow, as plants appear to be more tolerant of various environmental factors. Therefore, personal preference is the biggest thing to consider when choosing plants-in other words, what would you like to have grown fresh in your own home?

Before beginning the construction of the aquaponics system, the final and equally important factor to consider is pot placement. The pots should preferably be at waist level, so you won't have to lean over to harvest the plants and inspect them. Moreover, you will be able to position the fish tank directly under the pots, saving room for you.
