It will save you from having to buy filtering elements by selecting gravel as the growing bed medium. One with a dimension of around 1/3 to 3/4 of an inch in diameter is the safest gravel to use.
If the gravel is much smaller, it can block and obstruct the flow of water. Nor do you want it too high, as it does not philtre the water and does not protect the roots of the plant. The gravel would also provide the bacteria, which are a critical component of the aquaponics system, with an excellent habitat. On the hand and on the roots, get smooth, round gravel that is gentle.

Plants, on the other hand, will tolerate pHs as low as 4.5, but fish will begin to die at pHs below 6.5. Therefore, for both fish and plants, a pH range of 6.7 to 7.0 is ideal.
