Aquaponic gardens will provide you with plenty of fresh vegetables and delicious fish, they are perfect for any kind of home as well as any age and occupation you might have. They can not, however, take care of themselves! It is true that they need very little care, but to get very good results and keep the farm producing for a long period of time , it is important that you give them those few minutes a day each and every day.
Aeration is the primary phase in aquaponics. Then your fish will be happy and your plants will grow normally if the water is properly aerated. If, on the other hand, the water is not oxygenized properly, then there is very little hope that your farm can live for more than a few days.
The reasons why aeration is so important are very clear and easy for everyone to understand. The dissolved oxygen is, first of all, essential for the fish to breathe. Even though fish live under water, they still need to breathe and they need oxygen to survive, just like other animals. They die because they lack oxygen, so the balance of your aquaponic system is lost and your plants will start to turn yellowish in a matter of days and ultimately die out.
Although this was not enough, in the presence of oxygen, fish excrement is broken down and converted from poisonous ammonia into useful nitrates. Thus, if the water is not aerated properly, the fish poop will not be transformed, while the fish will die intoxicated with ammonia, the plants will have nothing to eat. That's not a very good view, isn't it? This is why each and every day you will have to track the consistency of your water and have a back-up plan in case the electricity gets off and the air pumps can no longer operate. This is the only way you can save and make your aquaponic system work for a long period of time. For that, your plants and your fish will thank you!
