Interesting Social Media Statistic
It turns out that the majority of people, across both political isles view social media as a societal blight, and most still use it daily. It's the ultimate form of irony.
Social Media Addiction Survey
I took the "“Am I ADDICTED to social media?” QUIZ, these were the results that I received.
Congratulations! Psychologists estimate that as many as 5 to 10% of Americans meet the criteria for social media addiction today. But luckily, that's not you! Not checking social media every few minutes doesn't make you feel anxious, as you prefer to live 'in the moment' rather than through your apps. You use social media to your advantage, at work and to connect with friends and family, but you know when to put it away. Keep it up!
I have to say that I agree with this sentiment, as I've never been a huge fan of social media, nor managed to get myself addicted to it, my relationship with television on the other hand is a different story.
Project Description
This is a project that showcases some of the ways social media impacts society. I even delved into how it affects me.
Lessons Learned
I learned a surprising amount throughout this activity. The Pew Research surveys were the most surprising, as they shared insights and statistics I would never have even guessed.
Social Media's Impact on Society
Personally, I'm of the mindset that social media, just like any other tool has been both a blessing, and a blight. It's partly responsible for the societal atomization that exists in our current society, each person living in their own specially curated world of ones and zeroes. Not only this, but I've personally found it a bit uncomfortable with how blase some people are about their privacy, willing to share intimate photos of themselves or even their children with random strangers, exposing intimate aspects of their lives. I suppose it's similar to how people were about slides in the past, the differentiator being that those slides could only really be shared with people you know as opposed to strangers living on the opposite side of the planet. On the other hand, it has had some benefits, such as allowing geographically dispersed, and fringe communities to connect with one another, and share, and compile information that in the past would be impossible to locate.
