Geofenced audio
Geofencing is a location based tech in which a device triggers an action on an application when the device enters a virtual boundary, known as a 'geofence'. Geofences can be as small as one building or as big as an entire city. One app known for making use of this innovative technology is ECHOES.
Cider Museum Trip
Notes
Horses and carts were used to transport apples
There are Sharp, Bittersharp, Bittersweet and Sweet apples. Only sweet apples are eaten.
The process of makin cider consisted of 6 steps;
Picking the apples
Popping them
Pressing them
Fermenting them
Maturing them
Bottling them
Cider is not brewed - no heat involved, a purely cold process
People used to pay with cider before it was disalloed in 1850, however people would still do so until 1940
Life cycle of an apple
Seeds planted
Grows into a tree
Tree forms buds
Buds form blossoms
Blossoms fall leaving apples in their place
The symbology of apples in different cultures
In western culture the apple is looked at as a symbol of health and education ("an apple a day keeps the doctor away"), a symbol of knowledge and wisdom from the Greek myth of the golden apple, which was used by Paris to appoint aphrodite the title of "fairest."Finally, they are looked at as a symbol of temptation, sin and the fall of man, of course from the account of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
In Japanese culture its considered a symbol of wisdom and longevity.
In Chinese culture apples are considered to be a symbol of peace and safety. The word for apple sounds very similar to the word for peace, and apples are often given as gifts to convey good wishes and harmony.
Norse Mythology
In Norse Myhthology, Idunn is thought to be a fertility 'goddess' who holds the apples of eternal youth that the other 'gods' rely on to remain young and healthy. So these 'gods' were not immortal, they just lived long lives made possible by the apples of Idunn.
Bible
Fruit in the Bible can represent a couple of different things.
The most well known example is the account of Adam and Eve in the garden of eden. The story goes that after God had finished making making the earth and everything on it, he created a man called Adam. After this, he placed 2 trees at the center of the garden of eden - the tree of life, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God placed Adam in the garden to tend and watch over it. He also warned Adam that he could eat the fruit of any tree, except the fruits of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. After this, God created a woman, Eve.
One day, a serpent in the garden questions Eve if God had really said that they could not eat the fruit of any tree. Eve replies saying that they could eat the fruit of any tree in the garden except from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, for God said you must not eat or touch it - if you do, dying you will die. The serpent deceived Eve into believing that this was not true, and so she ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, and Adam did so too. Because they did this, they became sinful and had sinful nature. They were also changed physically - they were now mortal and the dying process had started, and as a result of that, all of mankind inherited the same physical and moral nature.
In Paul's letter to the Galatians, he talks about the 'fruit of the spirit.' In Galatians 5 verses 22 and 23 it says "But the Holy Spirit produced this kind of fruit in our lives; love(;) joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." In these verses it says that the fruit of the spirit is love, and that the following 8 things listed out are an aspect of love.
In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul describes love and its characteristics. "Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it thinks no evil. It does not rejoice in iniquity but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love bears all things, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Love never fails."
8 aspects in Galatians 5, and 16 ways to express love in 1 Corinthians 13 - each aspect has 2 different expressions;
Joy can be expressed by being always hopeful, and rejoicing.
Peace can be expressed by bearing all things, and enduring through every circumstance.
Patience can be expressed by patience, and not being easily irritable.
Kindness can be expressed by kindness, and not being jealous.
Goodness can be expressed by not rejoicing in iniquity (immoral or unfair behaviour), and by thinking no evil.
Faithfulness can be expressed by never losing faith, and never failing.
Gentleness can be expressed by not being rude, and not demanding your own way.
Self-control can be expressed by not being proud, and not boasting.
Fruit is also mentioned in the teachings of Jesus. In the Gospel record written by John, Jesus uses an analogy, describing himself as a grapevine, God as the gardener and us as branches. If a branch is rooted in the grapevine, and is watered by the gardener, it will bring forth good fruit. In the same way if people's way of life is rooted in Jesus, and they show that in the way they live, God will 'water' them and help believers grow. However there is another side to this analogy.
If a branch does not produce good fruit, the gardener cuts off that branch and any others that do not produce fruit. In the same way if people do not live a life rooted in Jesus shown by the way they live, they will be cut off forever.
Echoes Location
As I will be talking about the symbology of apples in norse mythology, but mainly the Bible, I would like to have my location in or near the cathedral or at a religious mural.
Cathedral
St Peters Church
Ideas
Write a story loosely based off an existing famous apple-related story
Could re-write the story but still have the same key points
Look into symbology of apples and orchards
Apples/fruit in the Bible
Norse mythology and the stories of apples
History of apples in Herefordshire
Final Idea
For this project I have decided to do a brief summary of the symbology of apples/fruit in the Bible. This is because the location I have chosen is just outside St Peters Church in Hereford.
Notes
Cannot just list off a bunch of facts as this will be dreary to listen to, so;
Be enthusiastic in speech
Maybe briefly tell some famous stories of apples
Explain the origin of the symbology - where did the symbology come from and why?
'Tell them what you're gonna tell them, tell them, then tell them what you've told them.'
Pre-Production
Planning
General: Start with the account of Adam and Eve as everyone knows that story. Cover the symbology of apples/fruit in the Bible.
References to look at - Galatians 5 (fruit of the spirit - love and its aspects), 1 Corinthians 13 (chapter of love).
Link Galatians and Corinthians together.
Rough Script
In norse mythology, apples symbolize youth and immortality. This is due to the character Idunn, the goddess of spring, or rejuvenation. Idunn is a very interesting character in norse mythology, and she's best known as the goddess whose role it is to guard the apples that granted the other gods their eternal youth - the apples of immortality.
In one of the mythological tales, Idunn's story takes a dramatic turn. She is kidnapped by the giant Thiassi who is overcome with greed and wants to take the apples for himself. With the absence of Idunn, the other gods start to age and grow weak. Desperate for the return of Idunn, the other gods forced Loki - known for his cunningness and trickery - to retrieve Idunn, from Jotunheim. When he arrived there, Thiassi - who had kidnapped Idunn - wasn't there, he was out fishing. Loki quickly turned Idunn into a nut, and brought her with him back to the other gods. When Thiassi returned from his fishing trip, he set out after Loki. Loki had almost made it back to the fortress where the other gods were waiting, with Thiassi fast approaching behind. Loki managed to get back before Thiassi caught him, and Thiassi went up in flames, and was killed by the other gods.
In the Bible, apples are not explicitly mentioned, however fruits still hold important meaning.
The most well known example is the account of Adam and Eve in the garden of eden. After God had finished making making the earth and everything on it, he created a man called Adam.
On a more positive note, fruits can also be the result of a good action in the Bible. In Paul's letter to the Galatians and chapter 5, he describes the 'fruit of the spirit.' Paul writes in verses 22 and 23 "But the Holy Spirit produced this kind of fruit in our lives; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control." Here we are clearly shown what the fruit (characteristics) of a faithful believer should be. This can be linked back to the teachings of Jesus. In the Gospel record written by John, Jesus uses an analogy, describing himself as a grapevine, God as the gardener and people as branches. If a branch is rooted in the grapevine, and is watered by the gardener, it will bring forth good fruit. In the same way if people's lives are rooted in Jesus, and they show that in the way they live, God will help them grow.
However there is another side to this analogy.
If a branch does not produce good fruit, the gardener cuts off that branch and any others that do not produce fruit. In the same way if people do not live a life rooted in Jesus, and therefore do not produce the fruit of the spirit, they will be cut off forever.
Sound Effects

Final Script
Hello, right now, you're stood outside St Peters Church in Hereford during the time of applefest. As this a time that Hereford's apple heritage is celebrated - and as you're stood outside a church - I thought it would be appropriate to look into the symbology of apples in the Bible.
Apples, however, are not actually explicitly mentioned once in the Bible, but fruit is.
The most well known example of a fruit in the Bible is in the account of Adam and Eve in the garden of eden. The story goes that after God had finished making making the earth and everything on it, he created a man called Adam. After this, he placed 2 trees at the center of the garden of eden, those being the tree of life, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God placed Adam in the garden to tend and watch over it. He also warned Adam that he could eat the fruit of any tree, except the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Because they did this, they were changed morally, to have sinful nature. They were also changed physically - they were now mortal and the dying process had started, and as a result of that, all of mankind inherited the same physical and moral nature.
Here, fruit is looked at as a sign of temptation, or sin.
On a much more positive note, fruit is more frequently a representation of good characteristics of a faithful believer.
In Paul's letter to the Ecclesia (or church) at Galatia, he talks about the 'fruit of the spirit.' In Galatians 5 verses 22 and 23 it says "But the Holy Spirit produced this kind of fruit in our lives; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control." Here we are clearly shown what the fruits (characteristics) of a faithful believer should be. In these verses we're told that the fruit of the spirit is love, and that the following 8 things listed out are an aspect of love, and these aspects can each be expressed in 2 different ways.
Here, love is described as the fruit of the spirit, its aspects, and how we can express each aspect in our actions.

Research
10/9/24 - Today we got given the brief for this project - Create a location based (geofenced) audio experience for the applefest audience to discover and enjoy. The audio experiences will be hosted on the ECHOES app.
Today I spent my time just thinking of initial ideas for what I could do my story on, and also researching geofenced audio.
I think today could have gone better as I didn't manage to write down much research on geofenced audio, however I think this is also due to there being a lack of information online on geofenced audio, as it can be described fully in just a couple of sentences.
11/9/24 - Today we went on a trip to the Museum of Cider in Hereford. The trip started off with a presentation covering the brief history of cider and apples in Hereford.
I found this trip helpful as we discovered more about the context to apples, cider and applefest in Hereford, which meant I had more info to go off which gave me some more ideas.
Idea Generation
12/9/24 - Today I carried on with research. I looked into the symbology of apples in norse mythology, and fruit in the Bible (as apples aren't explicitly mentioned).
Overall I am really happy with how research has gone - I've discovered enough to talk for long enough to meet the minimum time requirement for our audio, and I found different passages in the Bible that link together talking about fruit.
13/9/24 - Today we were put into groups to discuss each of our ideas, and give feedback.
I personally found this really helpful as I could see what would and wouldn't interest people, and it was helpful to hear what I could improve on.
17/9/24 - Today I spent my time refining my idea. Originally I was going to talk about the symbology of apples in both norse mythology and the Bible, but I've decided that my location will be outside St Peters Church in Hereford, so I thought it would be more appropriate to talk just about the Bible.
I found today very productive as now I know exactly what I need to do and I can just focus on production for the final few days of this project.
Production
18/9/24 - Today I spent my time writing up my script. This was a fairly easy process as it was mainly just a copy paste of my research with some re-wording to make it more engaging.
19/9/24 - Today I recorded all my audio. I wasn't in college today so I didn't have access to any college equipment which meant I had to record the audio on my phone under a blanket, to try and make the audio the best quality possible. After I finished recording I went back through and edited the audio, just removing any bits where I stutter and have to restart etc. After this I put the audio into adobe podcast to clean it up a bit.
I'm really happy with the audio as it sounds really crisp - thanks to adobe podcast. However I still think I could've been more enthusiastic at times.
Post Production
20/9/24 - Today I edited the audio, adding any sound effects necessary as well as some faint background music. Overall I am quite happy with the audio I produced. Had I had more time, I may have experimented with some foley sound effects, but due to only having one day to finish everything off I had to download sound effects from online, as well as the music.
Overall Evaluation
Overall, I am satisfied with the final product. I wasn't expecting the audio to be such good quality, and there were doubts at the start if I would even find anything to talk about for 3 minutes.
I struggled at the start to come up with some ideas, but after I decided to look into the symbology of fruit in the Bible it became a lot easier to come up with some ideas, as I was looking into things which genuinely interested me which gave me a good motivation boost.
Script writing was fairly easy - it was basically just a copy and paste of the research I had done and re-wording little bits here and there to make it more engaging. The script was pretty good and I think I explained things clearly enough to people who may have never heard of the things concerning fruit in the Bible with the time I had, but I think I could've put more effort into making it more simple to understand, even if that meant the audio being slightly longer.
Audio recording was straight forward. The whole process only took about 15 minutes as I had to go back and alter the script slightly, and me stuttering every 20 seconds didn't help either. But overall it was a really simple and fun process.
Post production again was fairly straight forward. I did some digging on a few different websites to try and find some music that fitted the vibe of what I was saying. The audio isn't perfect for what I needed it for, but it was the best thing I could find and I didn't really have enough time to keep desperately looking through every single copyright free music website to find the perfect one.
Overall I am satisfied with how this project went, and it ended up being a lot more fun than I thought it would be at first which was a pleasant surprise.
What I learned from this project;
Be more open minded to project briefs
If you can link it to a personal interest it helps motivation a lot
