Hey! My name is Alix Petz (he/they) and I am a Stage Management artist based in Boston, Massachusetts. Originally from rural Indiana, I was first introduced to theater through acting in my high school’s spring musicals before falling in love with stage management. Theater’s ability to reflect human life and the community storytelling forms is what I love the most about this industry. Being a witness to the growth and development of a production from beginning to end, as well as seeing the responses of the audience is what drew me to the role of a stage manager. We are one of the few people that get to see the diverse range of puzzle pieces that need to fit together to make a production happen!
I have recently earned my BFA in Stage Management with a minor in Classical Civilizations from Boston University. During my academic career, I had the opportunity to be engaged with classical texts and new works, both of which I feel particularly inspired by and drawn to. Similar to how seeing a process from pre-production to closing connects us deeper to the production, I believe that seeing the history of theater and how it has grown and changed across time and cultures creates a deeper sense of appreciation for the art form, and reveals how it can directly impact the world we live in and the future we are working towards. Classics challenge us to reflect on whose voices have been prioritized historically, and new works provide us the opportunity to uplift and support previously unheard stories. I want to continue to engage with theater that challenges artists and the audience to reflect on the role we all play in shaping the world around us, and that looks deeply at the human experience.
When I am not in the rehearsal room I can be found going on absurdly long walks, watching 2010s historical dramas, or scrapbooking.
"Alix Petz (he/they) is a stage management artist from Argos, Indiana. He is passionate about work that inspires the audience to reflect on their influence over the world around them and encourages them to intentionally participate in their communities. Particularly interested in classics and new works, he hopes to play a part in analyzing stories of the past and uplifting voices of the future. Alix hopes to continue to work with artists that push him to grow and learn as both a collaborator and as a fellow human being, and facilitate environments where brave creative choices are made."
As an emerging Stage Manager, I know that there is always room for personal and professional growth within my practice. In an effort to prioritize what I believe to be most important, I have written a mission for myself that I am able to go back to and reflect on as I gain more experience and continue to learn. Below are some of the things I strive for, and hope to grow in over the course of my career.
In my career, I hope to…
Be a facilitator of spaces where theatermakers feel welcome, valued, and heard; empowering them to make brave artistic decisions
Constantly grow in my understanding of what it means to make theater accessible and incorporate practices into my work that reflect that
Advocate for the exploration of diverse stories and uplift marginalized and historically silenced voices
Collaborate with fellow artists that push me to learn, and that grow with me as we create and explore the stories we are telling
Be mindful of the waste created on a process and work to implement eco-friendly, sustainable practices
Create habits that allow me to practice active listening and self care
