ELC010-ENGLISH FOR PRE-DIPLOMA I
This course is designed to improve the language ability of pre-diploma students whose proficiency is at elementary level. It focuses on the four language components which are reading, writing, listening and speaking. The teaching of grammar is integrated into the four language components.
ELC020-ENGLISH FOR PRE-DIPLOMA II
This course is designed to reinforce the language skills learnt in ELC010. The target group is pre-diploma students who do not manage to enter the Diploma programme. ELC121-INTEGRATED LANGUAGE SKILLS I
This course is designed to build the listening, speaking and reading skills to help students perform effectively and competently in the social and academic contexts.
ELC151-INTEGRATED LANGUAGE SKILLS II
This course is designed to help students become confident and independent readers by exposing students to intensive reading skills and a variety of reading materials.
ELC231-INTEGRATED LANGUAGE SKILLS III
This course is designed to equip students with the necessary writing skills to help them improve their written English. This is conducted by integrating reading, speaking skills with the emphasis is on writing skills.
ELC270-ENGLISH FOR WORKPLACE COMMUNICATION
This course aims to develop the students’ ability to communicate in English using appropriate and effective language expressions in work-related situations.
ELC501-ENGLISH FOR CRITICAL ACADEMIC READING
This course is designed to develop students’ ability to read analytically and think critically. It focuses on the relationship between reading and critical thinking and provides students with a structured method for interpreting content and organization of written texts. Tasks and activities suggested are discipline-based.
ELC550-ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC WRITING
This course focuses on developing students’ ability to write academic texts. It provides students with a structured method for paraphrasing, summarising and organising the content of written texts. This course also enhances students’ critical thinking skills to synthesise and evaluate academic texts using a standardised reference/citation format.
ELC590-ENGLISH FOR ORAL PRESENTATIONS
This course is designed for students to develop the strategies and skills necessary for effective oral presentations. Guidance is provided from the preparatory right up to the final stage of delivery. The course focuses on oral communication theory and practice with emphasis on the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
ELC640-ENGLISH FOR JOB APPLICATION
This course aims to provide students with the necessary skills to perform at job interviews and to provide solutions in work related situations. Students are trained to design resumes, write application letters and give appropriate responses to given problems. The course also provides students with written communication and interpersonal skills essential for their personal and professional growth.
ELC650-ENGLISH FOR PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION
This course is designed to equip students with interpersonal skills necessary to help them focus on their personal growth and development as professional individuals. By introducing students to language functions essential for developing interpersonal skills, the course is designed to help them to communicate and interact in the workplace. Specifically, students will be exposed to a wide range of language norms and conventions that are used daily to interact with individuals and groups in the workplace.
