Community college students are more likely to come from underserved populations and are inclined to feelings of self-doubt in academic settings. When learning online, our students need to know they have an instructor who cares and is there to support them, and that they are part of a vibrant learning community. Effective online teachers mindfully cultivate their presence at the course level and one-on-one with students. These interactions foster a relationship based on trust, which is the foundation of a learning community.
Before starting my journey with the @ONE program, I had taken several online classes during my own schooling and received some excellent examples 'what seems to work' and 'what not so much'. Accordingly, I attempted to be as present and available as I could using my previous experience.
Thanks to the many courses I took in the @ONE program and with the support of my valued peers, I have been able to improve my online presence, allow everyone to show their 'human side' and flourish in my courses if students desire to do so. However, there is always room for improvement.
In the months and years to come, I hope to improve on humanizing my classes even more by adding module overview videos and designing video assignments.
Based on the encouragement and with the assistance of my @ONE colleagues, I uploaded my first 'human' video announcement, which I then used as an inspiration to create my 2nd video.
I credited my peers and @ONE instructors for creating this video. I was initially afraid of posting 'this much personal information', but am happily reporting that many students seemed to have taken my offered vulnerability to heart and just 'tried' as I requested them to do.
Our course 'Q&A Cafe's' naturally serve as collaborative forum where everyone helps each other in a human way.
This is another announcement I posted in week#1 of a recent course; it appears, many students appreciated the flexibility.
In addition to weekly discussions and the Q&A Cafe, we regularly utilize the Canvas "Group Assignment' and 'Peer-Review' function.
