Insect ecology and 3P Network (pollinator-pollination-plant production)

Our teams are working rather broader perspectives in insect ecology and pest management as well as pollination. Goal is to have system-wised holistic understanding of the ecological principles and processes involved in the mutualistic interactions for better ecosystem services such as biocontrol and pollination. Ultimately increasing the productivity with environmentally benign approaches in agriculture and sustaining the food and nutritional demands in the local and global level are of interest. In that sense, we do research insects as the alternative food sources or biomaterials.

1. Eco-friendly apple production

: Habitat modification of pollinator habitats could increase pollinator diversity, and then enhance apple pollination producing high quality apple.

: Pollinator habitat could serve as natural enemy insectary for better biocontrol of insect pests in apple orchards with better environmental health: Pollinator habitat could bring smile back from the local village residents and farmers by enhanced rural amenity

2. Honeybee protection: pesticides and invasive pests

: Determining the ecotoxicological works of various pesticides

: Developing detoxifying medicines to reduce the severity of pesticide poisoning

; Varroa-Tropilaelaps mites are the two major acarine pests of honeybee. We are working on the interaction of these two competing pests on honeybee health and also developing a new plant-based acaricide

: Small hive beetle is an invasive pest of honeybee arrived in 2017. Origin of invasion, attractive trapping, thermal developmental studies are undergoing.

: Vespa hornets, especially Vespa velutina is a notorious exotic pest invaded in Korea from 2003. My lab is developing various strategies to suppress its population and protect the honeybees

3. Insect phenology modeling and timing pest management

: Insect’s response to temperature is always interesting topic especially in the climate change era. Then we do develop the phenology model based on temperature-dependent developmental rate for agricultural pest management as well as conservation biology.

4. Edible insects: Nutrition and functionality

Various kinds of insect have been consumed by various people in the world. Those insects are nutritious with valuable protein, easily digestible fatty acids, and important minerals and vitamins. Studying the nutrition and functionality of those insects could serve the future food security.
