Each January, 7th and 8th grade students from the 4 NKC Middle Schools have the chance to audition for placement in the NKC Middle School Honor Band. A few weeks later, students rehearse with a special guest conductor and put on a concert after just a few hours of rehearsal. Audition Material is one etude and scales for wind players, and percussionists play some snare, mallets and timpani.
Mr. Duren has invited a former student to share their thoughts on Honor Bands as a guest contributor to this site! Ms. Lauren Peck is currently a music student at Truman State University and graduate of Cameron High School, Missouri. During her middle school and high school years she auditioned for many Honor Bands, performed in many All-District Bands, was a two year member of the Missouri All-State Band, a member of the NAfME All-National Concert Band and a member of the John Philip Sousa National Honor Band.
5 Reasons Why You Should Audition for Honor Bands
By: Lauren Peck
Honor bands are invaluable experiences for any growing musician. Here are the primary reasons why these bands are so beneficial:
You gain audition experience
Playing an audition isn’t easy! But, it’s a great way to grow in confidence. You’ll prepare and perform a variety of music, and playing through the nerves is a great way to improve your performances in the future. So, even if your audition doesn’t go as well as you’d hoped, you can be confident you’ve gained something along the way!
You learn new music
If you participate in an honor band, the music you play will likely be completely new to you! The music performed in honor bands is often a level above what you might play in school, and this is both challenging and rewarding. Don’t be surprised if you leave with a new favorite piece!
You improve your musicianship
No matter how short the honor band, you’re guaranteed to leave a better musician! The challenge of this music will help you rise to a new level of playing, and you’ll find yourself surprised at how much you’ve grown as a result. Enjoy the process!
You learn from those around you
You’ve likely had the same conductor and bandmates for most of your life – and making music with those people is great! But, in an honor band, you’ll have the chance to sit beside musicians with different playing backgrounds. Take note of what they do well, mimic them, and grow as a result. Your conductor is also a wealth of knowledge. They may teach something in a way that makes it click!
You meet new friends
Finally, one of the greatest reasons to participate in an honor band! These bands are short, but don’t underestimate the power of making friends throughout the experience. They’re a great place to meet others who enjoy making music as much as you do (and understand all of the inside jokes of band). Chances are, the people you share a stand or eat lunch with will become friends along the way!
