Are we, "gonna have a problem here", as Eminem put it? It seems like a good idea, in principle. But so did introducing a toad in Queensland to eat beetles. Or saving money on lifeboats on a massive ship sailing the North Atlantic. Or...Windows Vista!
On the other hand, it could turn out to be a pivotal moment in human history but we just don't know it yet. Like the time Plato said this about the emergence of the written word in society, superseding the reliance on oration;
"if men learn this, it will implant forgetfulness in their souls. They will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written"
Oddly, we still say this, but about mobile phones and the like. It all has this underlying tone and subtext that we fear that it leads to the worst-case scenario...

Well, not him exactly, but rather the iconic face of the 'robot uprising' where machines become self-aware and decide humans are no longer relevant or needed. Is that where all this is leading? If so, how would we have gone from chatbots on a cell phone to global annihilation? Maybe the answer lies in what we know and do not know.
Or, more directly, what an AI knows...and knows that it knows...or doesn't know what it knows...and (here's the clincher) doesn't know what it doesn't know.
When we build technology, like AI, we try to pour into it, all the advancements, knowledge and superiority that are at hand, generally in keeping with Kurzweil's 'Law of Accelerating Returns', the exponential curve of evolutionary systems...or Moore's Law of doubling of technology every two years.
Of course, the AI itself wouldn't know that unless we told it. Not about Moore's law per se, it would undoubtedly be aware of that, and Asimov's three laws of robotics (hopefully). But why we told it...how we feel about making sure we told it...whether some of the coders were having thoughts about global annihilation because they just watched a Terminator 2 rerun.
The point is made clear by renowned AI expert, Stuart Russell when asked about the difference between how humans think and how an AI might think;

Now, ignoring the fact that seeing a robot destroy all Starbucks sales may well be a tantalising thought, the point is that before embarking on a coffee run, an AI-enabled 'droid' would need to be aware of the full human history of 'fetching coffee' and to take into account the myriad of other factors that should be assessed in carrying out this task.
Yep, and that's just getting coffee (he says, as if that's not important...it is!) Imagine all the consequences, ramifications, clarifications, prejudices, privileges and diverse situations we need to code into all the perceived actions and reactions of an unleashed AI in society. All the things that it doesn't know what it doesn't know.
Russell explains that if we don't build in these parameters in AI systems and asked for a solution to the acidification of the oceans, for instance, it may come up with something that works, like a global catalytic reaction, but consequently;
"consumes a quarter of the oxygen in the atmosphere, which would apparently cause us [all] to die fairly slowly and unpleasantly over the course of several hours"

We are on the cusp of something new, as yet untested and potentially unknown. Something that will profoundly change the way we all live, work, act and experience the world. It's coming and if Kurzweil and Moore are right, it will be here sooner than we expect. Strap in 'cos things are about to get...exponential.
