Deliverables

The Fellowship has deliverables, work the Fellows are expected to produce. These deliverables are:

Year 1
- Set community and professional goals.
- Develop 2 classroom activities that leverage the Expedition using a lesson template. One of the activities should involve Google products.
- Complete the National Geographic Certified Educator requirements
- Write about a teaching strategy gained through the Expedition.
- Participate in one community or public outreach event.
Year 2
- Take on a Community Leadership Role for one year.

I am in the process of completing these deliverables. I will be updating this page as they are completed.

Goals

Professional Goal 1

Integrate citizen science (iNaturalist and GLOBE) into expedition.

Status: Completed. See Data for examples.

Professional Goal 2

Borrow from structure of NG GTF to enhance professional development expeditions I facilitate.

Status: Expanding. I drew heavily upon the GTF for the field based professional learning opportunity I facilitated June 2018. You can read about that PD on Open Explorer. As part of my on-going action research project about this goal, I would like to refine and improve integration of the replicable elements of the GTF into my practice.

Local Community Impact Goal 1

Keep an ongoing written and photo journal before, during and after Expedition to share with a wider audience.

Status: Ongoing. This portfolio is part of this effort. I also have created a blog Earth Explorations that was inspired by this Expedition and will document further explorer developments.

Local Community Impact Goal 2

Develop understanding of climate change impact in my community.

Status: I'm considering revising this one to connect my community to the Polar region to better engage them in climate change understanding. As written above this goal feels like an outlier, like it doesn't hang well with the others.

Update 12/30/2018 I'm now thinking about revising it back to the original goal, thanks to a resource I got from a fellow GTF Ground Truth: A Guide to Tracking Climate Change at Home.

Classroom Activities

Surface Temperature Investigations

This activity was inspired by my own data collecting of surface temperature in on sea ice and open water in the Arctic. I wrote up how I facilitated a shortened version of this activity for a water festival setting where I only had 20 minute sessions.

Length of Daylight or Photoperiod

I developed this activity in response to my experience with 24 hour daylight. Understanding the amount of daylight or photoperiod for the different climate zones is instrumental in understanding their climate, why some are cold and why some are hot.

National Geographic Certified Educator

Status: Completed. I was a NGCE before embarking on the Fellowship. I am a Certified Educator Ambassador, which means I serve in a mentor/advisory capacity. I am also a Trainer.

Community or Public Outreach Event

Status: Completed. I gave a TEDx talk and was interviewed on a public radio program. See more about those on the Reflections page.
