For this project, I looked into the ways social media affects myself and others.
After taking the "Am I ADDICTED to social media?" QUIZ I came to terms with the fact I may be more attached to social media then I originally thought. The quiz stated that
"You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?"
I may need to rethink the actual amount of time I spend on my socials because I do tend to forget that the little checks here and there can add up.
In my opinion, social media has both a positive and negative effect on society. I have been able to connect and interact with people who have the same interests as me and have even been able to make friends with some! The downside is the hate some people can get due to people being more talk online than they are in person. I recently did a project for my communication's class about why Tattoo's Should Not be Unprofessional and while researching I came across an article on a man named Jeremy Schofield who is the ‘World’s most tattooed’ man who says, "Online people say all kinds of wild stupid things daily but in person, I never get anything, but friendly curiosity and compliments." and that he believes social media is making it easy for many people to be much more hateful then they’d ever dare to be in reality which I agree with.
An interesting fact that I also agree with is the number of American's who are concerned and confused about how their data is being used. Especially since I've gotten both emails about data breaches from the sites and gaming services I've use/used like Wattpad, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube in 2020. And letters from third parties about insurance company data breaches.
One thing that I learned while reading the article "How Americans View Data Privacy" besides the amount of American's who are largely concerned and confused about what's being done with their data is that 6 in 10 American's frequently skip over reading the private policy which is something that I am also guilty of. I also believe I have a positive outlook on certain aspects of social media due to me not really having any negative experiences. But that could be because I only really use social media to talk to my friends and watch videos on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and TikTok.
