Writing recommendation letters is an important part of the work I do, and doing it well requires time! So that I can write you the strongest recommendation possible, please request the letter at least one month in advance of the (earliest) due date. 

In your initial request, please include: 

1. • The type(s) of position(s) you're applying for (graduate school, job, transfer, etc.)

   • Why you think I'm a particularly good person to recommend you, or what you hope my recommendation will communicate to the place you're applying 

   • The format of the recommendation  (formal letter, phone call, etc.)

   • The earliest due date

If I agree to write the letter, please send me the following additional information at least 3 weeks in advance of the earliest due date: 

1. • What name do you prefer I use for the letter? (E.g., "Sam" vs. "Samantha") 

   • For students, what is your year and major? For graduates, what year did you graduate, and with which major? 

   • What is my relationship to you? (E.g., research advisor, teacher, TA supervisor) 

   • What are you applying for and what are the application due dates? 

   • Describe the program/job a bit and tell me about why you're interested in it -- what are your long term goals and how will this position help you attain those goals? 

   • Is there anything specific you would like me to speak to in the letter? E.g., particular skills that the program is looking for and which you think I'm well suited to discuss?
