Ocean waves are formed with the contact between the earth, moon and the sun. Ocean waves are also formed by wind blowing across the surface of ocean water. Through the forces of friction and pressure, wind transfers energy to the surface of the sea, creating first ripples and eventually the swells we call waves
The more wind there is, the more and bigger waves there will be. The maximum size of waves will depend upon three factors: wind speed, wind duration, and the fetch, which is a measure of the size of the area over which the wind is blowing.
Tides
The biggest waves in our oceans are the tides. Tides are the regular rise and fall of sea levels. These are caused by the gravitational forces between the earth and the sun and the moon.
