Hi, my name is Fiona Pearce and I'm a second-year student in the Honours Environmental Studies program at uOttawa. I am an outdoor enthusiast, hiker, and biker (not the Harley Davidson kind). Through my program, I am learning about the impact I can have on the biosphere and how to build a more conscious relationship with the earth and share my understanding with others.
The intent of my project was to show how there are many opportunities for concerned citizens to identify and hopefully remove some illicit wildlife trade using free software and retailer policies. In the first section, I showed that many sites like Ali-Express have committed to removing a large portion of animal-based products from their marketplace if the animal is categorized as endangered by the CITES list of endangered species.
The next section details how one might go about searching for and collecting listings of products that violate the terms of service relating to endangered species. My methods outline several Python modules that are useful for scraping the web including, urllib, Beautiful Soup and Selenium. I also showed how one might allow a user to enter search terms and how lists of terms can be manipulated to automate searches. I intend to update this document with information on exporting the scraped data. Despite only having a month’s worth of experience with Python I my efforts to create a home-brew web-scraper were successful.
Finally, I discuss practical and ethical questions resulting from this type of activity. These include questions about farmed crocodiles, destroying a person’s income and ensuring that the product is truly illicit. I believe that web-scraping/crawling has vast potential for curbing the illegal wildlife trade on the internet, especially if others apply their knowledge of different websites and modules to build off of the ideas explored here.
In 2019, the City of Ottawa voted against the implementation of a pollinator protection initiative known as Bee City. Rather than focus on another city-wide proposal, Jessica targeted one of the City's largest community members, the University of Ottawa. Her plan is to implement the Bee City project on the University's main campus and use them as a role model for other community members and municipalities in the area. This proposal will target uOttawa's governing body, along with various on-campus initiatives and offices such as the uOttawa Sustainability Office.
Below is a copy of the proposal in photo format. She decided to keep it simple so that it can be easily read and understand.
