Week 3: Session 5
In this week we were tasked to complete this worksheet which challenged our understanding of the types of arguments that we were taught.
I uploaded the "Identifying Types of Arguments" activity worksheet to my portfolio of learning because it significantly contributes to my growth as a medical student. This worksheet enhances my analytical skills by requiring me to dissect and analyze various arguments, which is crucial for evaluating clinical studies, research papers, and patient cases. It also improves my understanding of different types of arguments—inductive, abductive, and deductive—helping me construct coherent and logical arguments in my academic writing and professional communication. Engaging with this worksheet promotes critical thinking, enabling me to question assumptions, identify logical fallacies, and evaluate the strength of evidence, which are essential for making informed clinical decisions. Additionally, it fosters evidence-based practice by helping me distinguish between anecdotal evidence and scientifically robust data, ensuring my clinical decisions are grounded in reliable research. This activity also refines my communication skills, preparing me for effective interactions with patients and colleagues. Furthermore, it equips me for exams and assessments that require strong analytical and reasoning abilities. Lastly, understanding arguments aids in navigating ethical dilemmas in healthcare by considering various perspectives and making ethically sound decisions. Including this worksheet in my portfolio demonstrates my commitment to developing these critical skills, essential for my success as a medical student and future healthcare professional.
Week 2 : Session 5
In this activity we were tasked to select a cognitive bias that interests us the most and identify its relation to medicine. I think it is important to be aware of these cognitive biases as they hinder critical thinking.
Week 3 - Reading academic texts
This is a worksheet that we were given in the third week of this course. We were tasked to read an academic text applying the SQ3R method that helps us improve how we read academic texts. This worksheet challenged our understanding of the SQ3R method and helped us understand in the process of writing.
This worksheet is a valuable tool for improving critical reading and analysis skills in academic texts. It provides structured activities that guide us as students through the process of critically engaging with academic texts, enhancing their ability to identify key arguments, evaluate evidence, and understand complex concepts. Active engagement reinforces understanding and retention of the material, allowing for better recall and application in studies and future work. The exercises encouraged me in analytical thinking, breaking down information, comparing viewpoints, and synthesizing ideas, essential skills in any academic discipline. I believe this worksheet improved my notetaking skills, with sections for summarizing key points and taking notes, preparing us for exams, essays, and discussions. Engaging with academic texts helps students understand how scholarly arguments are constructed, which is crucial when writing academic papers. Completing the worksheet fosters self-directed learning habits, such as setting goals, managing time, and assessing one's understanding. This worksheet in my portfolio demonstrates my commitment to developing these essential academic skills and a proactive approach to learning.
The documentary we were asked to watch:
REFENCES
Google Docs. (n.d.). What Counts.mp4. [online] Available at: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1erSkVWpTYnUQwQo_AsjW9ETejgvSougE/view.
We were given this task as a group work, tasked to focus on the health system answering questions after watching a documentary.
I added the "SAHL Tutorial – What counts as health?" exercise to my learning portfolio as it provides a thorough analysis of the social determinants of health, with a special emphasis on the healthcare system. By deepening my awareness of how the healthcare system's accessibility, quality, equity, and resource distribution affect people's individual and community health, this activity greatly advances my development as a medical student. It also emphasizes how critical it is to address socioeconomic inequalities and how integrated healthcare approaches that take into account both the social and medical facets of health are necessary. This exercise gives me a more comprehensive understanding of health by evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of the healthcare system and looking at actual cases.
This activity introduced me to sites such as Pub Med and Google Gemini which I did not know existed. After completing this activity, I knew how to refine my searches to get the relevant information I am searching for.
Pub Med also helped me a lot when I had to do my ISMS 100A researches.
