The Commission on DEI is committed to addressing all forms of prejudice and bias within our community. The Commission on DEI strives to promote diversity, equity and inclusion of all historically marginalized groups, regardless of whether their status receives special protections under Massachusetts law.
The experience of all people when interacting with the Town is critical to the Commission on DEI’s work. The Commission’s priority is to address the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion with respect to residents, Town programs, employees, and businesses.
The Commission on DEI will implement its work based on best practices language and information. Accordingly, the Commission on DEI is committed to challenging its members to learn, grow, and evolve.
The Commission on DEI strives to create tangible and lasting change within the Town of Andover. Conversations around the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion are important, but the Commission will endeavor to produce real results for the Town of Andover. These changes will rely on data and community-identified priorities.
The Town of Andover’s Commission on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (the “Commission” or the “Commission on DEI”) strives to promote the diversity of our Town, the equity of opportunity and treatment, and the fostering of an inclusive environment for all. The Commission reflects the Town’s permanent commitment to improve our community by placing these principles at the core of all Town endeavors. By prioritizing this important work, we are able to address areas where we have not yet met our aspirations to treat all individuals with the fundamental respect that all humans deserve, and we can celebrate the components of our Town that make us vibrant and unique.
The Commission on DEI was created following the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020. The creation of the Commission was an acknowledgment that racial prejudice in the Town of Andover continues to be a prevalent issue. Accordingly, the work of the Commission on DEI is squarely rooted in addressing racial bias within the Town. In addition, the work of the Commission will also continue to champion concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion beyond race-based issues.
The Commission on DEI will use this Mission Statement to provide a framework for taking a position on matters, particularly when determining whether a matter is within the scope of the Commission on DEI’s purview.
The Select Board and Town Manager develop annual strategic priorities. Advancing the work of the Commission on DEI has been identified as a priority for several years.
The Commission’s Strategic Plan took the equity goals expressed by our community and created several working groups comprised of community volunteers to further our goals.
Andover’s DEI Commission recognized successful progress toward a more inclusive community demanded the involvement of the wider community. In this case, the creation of working groups populated by countless community volunteers who are engaged in affecting positive change in Andover through the completion of the Commission’s strategic goals.
