The Blue-Spotted Salamander itself is an indicator species of vernal pools and is of special concern in Massachusetts. The deterioration of this species reflects the poor state our vernal pools and the entire environment are in, and by making the Blue-Spotted Salamander the State Salamander we can raise awareness of this tragedy.
Our bills have been sent into SARO, the Committee of State Administration and Regulatory Oversight, and we are awaiting a hearing date. We need your support and outreach now more than ever. We need as many letters as possible sent in from across the state to show its importance. We would highly appreciate endorsement and co-sponsorship from as many State legislators as possible. These bills were filed by House Representative Tram Nguyen and Senator Barry Finegold. It would establish the Blue-spotted Salamander (Ambystoma laterale) as the state salamander of Massachusetts.
We took this action to establish a State Salamander because they are indicators of how well the environment as a whole is doing. To choose one, we took a statewide poll and the Blue-spotted Salamander won decisively with 41% of the vote.
