The presence of other inns existing in Ancaster at an early date is also indicated by the Calcraft documents held by the Dorset History Centre, including:
The Rose and Crown
A messuage54 in Ancaster called The Rose and Crown and various closes of land in Ancaster, Sudbrook and Willoughby appear in Calcraft family documents for dates between 1660 and 1762.
The Swane
A messuage55 called the Swane, together with a barn in Ancaster, was mentioned in documents dated 1549. The Swane in Ancaster was also mentioned53 in documents relating to the Rose and Crown (above). date 1698.
William Gedney, innkeeper of Ancaster, in his will of 1579 evidently lived at the Angel Inn (see above). However, he also made mention of the house in Ancaster of his son and heir, Nicholas Gedney; this being called the 'Swayn' i.e. the Swan.
