Adjacent to the Roman road of Ermine Street, at the southern end of Ancaster, stands Ancaster House.
The house, which was originally a farm and later the home and surgery for the village doctor, was originally built in the 1680s and extensively remodelled in 1810. In recent years the fields attached to the house have been the site of a series of excavations which have helped improve our understanding of the development of occupation in the area from the Iron Age right through to the end of the Roman period and beyond.
The annotated drone photo on the right shows the trench plan from the excavations at Ancaster House. This can be used to help understand the layout of the features that have been uncovered at the site.
