WedCaterer

ROLE

lead UX designer, UX researcher

From conception to delivery

A project i made during GOOGLE UX Design course

The product

WedCaterer is an app for a catering company that specializes on caterings for weddings. The app is created to help users make an experience of planning their event food easier, more organized and quicker.

Challenges

  1. Planning meals for guests is often very hard and stressful.

  2. Each guest has different preference and ability to enjoy a meal.

  3. Ordering is often too chaotic.

User research

I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to help understand users and their needs better. A primary user group was identified through research was working adults who were planning their marriage.

The user group made several comments about included menu, shared what they wanted to see in the app and how the app could make it easier for them to plan their wedding meals. Research concluded that users want the app to help them save time planning as well as help them find the best choices of food that would be best for every guest at their wedding.

Main pain points

Time

Working adults often don’t have time to plan their wedding meals for guests.

Equity

Include choices for every user.

Add vegan, vegetarian, diabetic menus as well as dishes of different nations and races.

Accessibility

Make platform easy to navigate, equip it with assistive technologies

Meet the Users

Damir

Age : 27

Occupation: Supply manager

Hometown : Almaty, Kazakhstan

Damir is currently on a diet to lose weight and become healthy. His main wish is to have options of diet dishes. He also recently got engaged and is planning a big wedding. He wants to please every guest and make a special menu for everyone. It doesn’t help that the apps don’t have a feature to allow to add a list of guests and dishes for each of them.

“I want to have more choices in diet dishes, maybe something like Keto or detox…”

Alexandra

Age : 24

Occupation : Landscape designer

Hometown : Ekaterinburg, Russia

Alexandra is a landscape designer that travels around for work. She thinks that saving time and having easy to navigate catering app would be very suitable for her lifestyle. She also thinks that having a widget on phone screen would help have the control in planning and organizing.

“I feel that there are not enough catering apps that could help save time. Most of them are too confusing to use and it takes too much to order.”

Competitive Analysis

I conducted competitive audit and looked further into potential competitor companies. While there arent many direct competitors, some of them have a few disadvantages that my app could use.

  • apps are not accessible with bad design

  • minimal features and visuals

  • cannot place order righ away, need to put inqury and wait up to 2 weeks

  • only available in english

  • too many screens

Preparing

I constructed a user flow of a basic start to finish journey might look like while ordering dishes. This helped me see ways users can interact with the product.

Iteration

After creating a low fidelity prototype i have made a survey for test partisipants to fill out. I have asked 5 participants of different age, race, sexuality to run through few different scenarios to see and collect information for my next design iteration.

No filter

I found out that most users who were using search feature wanted to see filter button to navigate quicker.

Cooking and Delivery process

Many users pointed out that after payment there is no way to track their order. They needed to see cooking and delivery process.

Too much on the homepage

Some participants were confused by too many choices on th homepage. It slowed down the ordering processand made them anxious.

Cleared out Homepage

After research i have made homepage clearer so that users would easily navigate through the app. Changed the location of buttons from sidebar to bottom bar.

Added search filter and tags

Search filter and tags appeared to be very important. They help save tme when searching for dishes. Tags would help sort out dishes even faster. So after research i have adjusted my designs accordingly.

Cooking and Delivery

After paying for order users will be able to see the cooking process and delivery status of their order.

Design Change

After second Usability study many participants have pointed out that the design is too confusing and makes them lose focus. Others stated that the colors of the design are not accessible. Keeping in mind the feedback i have changed the design completely to better suit the users.
