Record IS08.26e: Slow Shelters
Location: Periphery of the fossil university.
Era: Transitional period between the Carbon-Coded Regime and Onto-Epistemic Unravelling (c. 2025–2038)
Classification: Informal resistance zone
Definition: Slow shelters were material or imagined spaces that resisted acceleration, extraction, and efficiency – sites of refuge, repair, and refusal, deliberately interrupting the logics of the petrocultural university. Off-grid, off-schedule, off-script.
Notes: Excavated from collapsed academic infrastructures. Initially catalogued as individual “burnout,” later reclassified as proto-resistance operating “outside of the university clock.” Some shelters displayed etched departure codes — spirals, asymmetrical doors, shadowed corners—believed – wayfinding marks for exiting institutional time. Shaped by manifestos of the period (Slow Science Manifesto, 2010; Shadow Places Manifesto, 2022; Manifesto for Decarbonizing Scholarship and Research, 2023).
